Your retirement options, what choice do you prefer

How do you imagine spending your retirement?

Growing up, my parents were my inspiration. They were always active, participating in sports and outdoor activities, and encouraging my siblings and me to do the same. Now in their mid-60s, I still look up to them and aspire to be half as fit and strong as they are. Currently, they are training for a hiking expedition in Nepal, which is no small feat at any age.

Their commitment to staying physically active as I compare to others of the same age and younger who struggle to walk the block, or get in and out of the car reinforces to me the importance to look after yourself.

Not that 60 is necessarily that old in this modern age but I do look at young 60 year olds and old 60 year olds.

In our 40’s and 50’s, we have a choice to make: we can either stay physically active and able, giving ourselves the best chance at a full life with opportunities, or we can ignore the signs and end up watching from the sidelines, or our arm chair. The benefits of physical activity are numerous, from reducing the risk of chronic illnesses to improving our mood, brain function, confidence, balance... It can help us maintain our independence and enjoy life to the fullest.

For my parents, staying active has been a priority throughout their lives. They have made time for regular exercise, whether it's hiking, biking, or swimming, horse riding, skiing and have encouraged us to do the same. As they age, they continue to set goals for themselves and challenge themselves to try new activities. Their determination and commitment has shown me that age is just a number as long as we keep moving and looking after ourselves.

Of course, staying active as we age is not always easy. There are obstacles to overcome, such as chronic conditions, injuries, and other physical limitations. But with dedication and effort, we can find ways to stay active and healthy. This can include modifications to our activities, seeking out support from friends and family, and working with healthcare professionals to manage any health conditions, do what you can, and it will always move you forward.

In conclusion, my parents are an inspiration to me and a reminder of the importance and enjoyment that comes from staying physically active and able as we age. We all have a choice to make, and I choose to follow in their footsteps as best I can and hope to be out adventuring and seeing places.
